If I were building an Automatic Man, I would simply not build him to break your heart

For All Mankind S2

Space shuttles!

Skylab!

There’s so much retro-fiction about the early Apollo days, but ooo this is *my* jam.

Also, lol Lunar Rover tech pushing the ‘80s Electric Car dream! Yes 😻

Proposal: A name for sci-fi set during/based upon the Cold War Space Race (such as For All Mankind, Lady Astronaut series): Ashpunk

For the ash plumes of rockets and also the usage of ashtrays as important engineering and scientific equipment

For All Mankind S1

It really bugs me that Apollo 25 should not be named Apollo 25. I get that the writers didn’t want to confuse things and probably just wanted to stick to serial flight numbers, but 25 was planned for Earth orbit and on a much smaller payload than a Lunar orbit run so it would have fallen under a different mission name than Apollo.

Though I also don’t think that Nasa would have kept using the Apollo designation post Jamestown base even for Lunar orbit, because new mission.

Only Murders in the Building

1) Cool to center a deaf character
2) I’m not sure about the tinnitus aggravating sound design
3) It’s great the actors studied ASL for this but, uh, yet another show where the camera crew did not. From what I know of ASL (and it’s not enough) too many closeups that miss half the gestures, they frame the face and the hands (sort of; in the edges of the frame) but not enough of the torso

Arachnid thoughts

Did some vacuuming this weekend. Anyone know how to translate “I’m sorry for ruining your art installations just days before Spooky Month” for me to send to my spider roommates?

“It’s confusing to commit to more than one reality.” –A Robot, subtweeting Westworld. Shots fired 😹

Foundation

Can we take a minute to appreciate a sci-fi epic where every other word can be “math” and half of them that means “hope” and “knowledge” and “doing the right thing”?

We know math can’t solve these problems in real life, but fuck is it nice to see it on a screen for an hour or two.

As a fan of Lee Pace from his pie making days (😼), I appreciate that he’s got a chunky Emperor role here.

This lovely shot is labeled “Dwarf Planet” and I started thinking “Dwarf Planet” is too new of a term for Asimov but then also, “You know, I think Asimov would have loved the term (I remember at least one book with a big tangent on Dwarf Stars) and I appreciate this.” (Take that DeGrasse Tyson!)

Watched the first episode of Foundation and wow is it gorgeous. Beautiful sets, amazing CG, lovely vistas

Super Mario Movie casting

I’ve been working hard on a conspiracy thread board, but I think I’ve finally cracked the secret of the casting announcement: the plot must be based on Super Mario Brothers 2 (aka Super Mario USA). It all makes sense:

- Why you need award winning actors for Toad and Peach and maybe Luigi.
- Jack Black isn’t playing Bowser for most of the movie he’s playing Wart!
- Chris Pratt isn’t Mario, he’s who Mario hears himself in his dreams! Martinet must still be Mario!

Yeah, I know it says a lot more about me that I have such issues with the existential horrors implicit in rooting through all the abysmal humanity in a true crime, but I’m fine with it if you tell me it is a fake crime.

I generally dislike true crime podcasts, but I also generally enjoy both Martins (Steve and Short) when they work together, so I’ve given Only Murders in the Building a chance. I appreciate they clearly live true crime podcasts but many of the jokes do a good job skewering things I dislike about true crime podcasts and also that it is still at the end of a day a fake crime show despite being about true crime podcasts.

PayPal (-)

(I guess at least PayPal wasn’t dumb enough to tie one of their better known/successful brands to it, like Google and that weird thing of replacing Google Pay with a “Google Pay” with half the features and built entirely around this Indian SMS payments thing that doesn’t make sense in the US and is also late to the game in competing with existing players in that space.)

PayPal (-)

The company that would eventually become PayPal bought the domain out from under my old web host for millions because it was a hip 4 letter .com. Used it briefly as the name of their service what became PayPal. Used it later for a failed “Would you trust PayPal to also be your bank?” brand. (Wonder why that didn’t work out 🤨) Apparently using it now for “Venmo, which we also own, but for international SMS payments because we hear those are big in India right now”

It’s so weird that PayPal has brought back the dumb Xoom brand name for its third (fifth?) re-usage.

Weird internet history: I used xoom.com as 90s dot-com boom web host. It was more featureful at the time than contemporaries Geocities/Angelfire/Tripod.

Star Trek Day (belated viewing)

Lol, Star Trek Day giving Travis Mayweather’s actor more lines than the entire show of Enterprise did

Star Trek Day (belated viewing)

It seems iconic to me here that the “here’s all the Star Trek” highlights video focused almost entirely on the TV shows ignoring the movies and then the “best of” orchestral suite makes some direct reuse of Giacchino’s arrangements for the Kelvin films. Love or hate the films themselves, Giacchino’s scores really did a “best of the TOS era scores but better arranged for a modern film orchestra” tour.
